African Family Health Organization
Tutor High School Refugees
Tutoring
Over Zoom, tutors will work with high school age refugees and immigrants on their remote work (weekdays 3-5pm)
African Family Health Organization is an organization in West Philadelphia that provides health and education services to African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees. During the school year, they run an after school program for mostly high school age students for homework help and general mentorship. The organization recently began an online version of this program, and it runs from 3-5pm Mondays through Thursdays over Zoom. Typically, tutors help in breakout rooms with homework. All of the students are ESL in the Philadelphia public school system and are struggling with the switch to online learning. Their English knowledge varies, but most speak French fluently.
Tutors can do as many days a week as desired, but tutors mustcommit to tutoring at least once each week to have consistency and build stronger relationships with the students. The tutoring will extend until the end of their school year, which is around mid to late June.

Youth Science Connection
college mentor
Tutoring
Serve as a college mentor to virtually guide high school students through STEM projects they can complete at-home (must be current/graduating college student)
Youth Science Connection is an online platform that allows high school students to complete science projects at home under the virtual guidance of a college mentor. Through the program high school students will come up with a project that they can do at-home, write a scientific research proposal, and make a scientific poster. Youth Science Connection provides a way for high school students to engage with the scientific method at their own pace while also getting to speak to an undergraduate student who can give perspective on what it is like to be a STEM major. In addition, our program takes place entirely online so students can learn and receive mentoring while still engaging in social distancing.
Eligibility Requirements to become a YSC College Mentor:
- Be a current undergraduate student at a college or university (Class of 2023 through Class of 2020)
- Have a passion for your field
- Be willing to dedicate approximately 1 hour per week coordinating with your YSC Mentee and YSC Staff

Sandwhich Making Tuesdays

Make and deliver 20 sandwiches for the Community Day Center of Waltham’s Tuesday program
The Tuesday Sandwich Makers is a project to help the Community Day Center in Waltham (CDCW) continue to serve a healthy lunch to their clients during this time of pandemic. CDCW is the only drop-in day program for homeless individuals in the Metrowest and until the pandemic, served a hot sit down lunch each weekday to their clients. But now they have adjusted to offering grab-and-go lunches. We ask that you/your group commit to making at least 20 sandwiches, but you can do all 40 as well. This is a perfect project for a youth group, teams of families, a class or just a group of friends wanting to pitch in. You can do it once, several times or on an ongoing basis. For everyone’s health and safety, makers must observe safe food handling practices and health guidelines that will be sent to you upon signing up.

Volunteers call senior citizens who want to see, talk to, email, or even play online games with a friendly face.
The impacts I have seen this organization make is astounding! The volunteers send updates on their experiences, and the seniors send emails of gratitude for the cards and new friends they made via audio calls. I can tell how much everyone, as well as myself, enjoy this and how it has developed into newfound friendships that can continue past quarantine.
We want to spread this joy to as many seniors as we can, but we need your help to do so. We have even partnered with many senior retirement communities and non profits, through which we make masks and cards to

B-day Cards for Holocaust Survivors
Elderly
Decorate birthday cards for Holocaust Survivors, leaving the insides blank.
We send roughly 35-50 birthday cards each month to individuals of our Schechter Holocaust Services program. The program much prefers to send hand-made cards versus store bought cards so they are more of a personal touch. We often received notes back from the clients thanking the card-writer for the birthday card. The client notes demonstrate how important it is to the client receiving the hand-made card. For some, this may be the only acknowledgement of their birthday All sizes are fine and you can find examples of card stock used here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IGDTNVK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. We ask that nothing be written about the recipients being Holocaust survivors or having endured hardships. • Please ask your artists to use colors and images that have a light, upbeat, cheery, peaceful, or neutral theme. We can’t send cards that have scary pictures on them.
• We need corresponding envelopes to whatever size cards you make. Unfortunately, we do nothave envelopes. When decorating the cards, please leave the inside panels blank so JF&CS staff can write a note in
each card.

Friendly Phone Calls
Elderly
Telephone reassurance volunteers spread cheer by making friendly phone calls to assigned clients once weekly to check in with them and have a brief conversation!
At CICOA, we have volunteers calling about 200 seniors every week. They chat about the weather, about grandkids or memories of their youth. It may not seem like a lot, but simple gestures can be the difference between life and death.
Does that sound dramatic? Social isolation is a serious issue, and seniors are at the highest risk. Isolation isn’t about being alone; it’s about feeling lonely and disconnected. People who feel lonely may have weakened immune systems that have trouble fighting off viruses, which makes them more susceptible to infectious diseases. In addition to weakened immune systems, studies show that social isolation can increase someone’s risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death.
Seniors—who are at the highest risk of COVID-19—need to stay home. Family, friends, and neighbors who once stopped by, can’t do that now. Seniors often don’t have the technology to participate in virtual calls. Many don’t drive, so they can’t participate in drive-by parades. Many are isolated, and many are anxious.
We know from research that when people engage in meaningful, productive activities with others, it boosts their mood, gives them a sense of purpose, and they tend to live longer. These activities seem to help maintain their well-being and may improve their cognitive function.
We want to do all we can to ward off depression and other risks associated with social isolation. While CICOA care managers regularly check on clients, they can’t call 11,000 clients weekly. Our telephone reassurance volunteers are helping to bridge the gap. While they make friendly calls, they also are watching out for those who are feeling down or sounding anxious. Volunteers report concerns so that care managers can take immediate action when needed.

Clean your neighborhoods, local parks, streets, and storm drains for California Coastal Cleanup
Cleanups are happening every Saturday in September. If Saturdays don\'t work for you, don\'t let that stop you! You can clean up any day, any time. If you report your cleanup to your local coordinator and/or record it on the CleanSwell app, all cleanups in September will be included as part of Coastal Cleanup Month. For safety reasons, there are no large, centrally organized cleanup sites this year. Instead, cleanups will be self-guided and close to home. Practice physical distancing, and strictly follow both local ordinances and this safety document. To learn more about cleanup efforts near you, contact your local county coordinator. Remember, beach cleanups start at your door. Thank you for staying safe, cleaning your neighborhoods, and protecting the coast!

Tutoring
Mentoring a young individual 2-4 times per month
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do. Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy them even more with your Little—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact. Volunteering just a few hours a month with a child can start something amazing. So why not apply to be a Big today. We have kids on our wait list just ready to get started. Join our team today!
